As he looked around, the former Beast was surprised that he felt nothing for his former residence. Over the last year he'd been nothing more than a squatter in this house, moving in after the previous owner either died or fled the area when Team Rocket took over. Rowan didn't belong here, he never did.[break][break]

"Goodbye." He scooped up the bottle of wine on the counter and flipped off the lights, closing the door behind him. There was one destination he had before the end of the night, arriving at the doorstep of one Elisabeth Fiorelli after a short trip. Three knocks on the door and he took a step back, waiting for her to answer.

More and more, she felt herself drifting away from the Petalburg Woods.[break][break]

Her role as underboss kept her in Sootopolis for longer days that turned into longer nights. The small apartment she had purchased for herself had become a home-away-from-home, tidily tucked away into an urban setting that was nothing like she'd ever lived in before.[break][break]

She wasn't sure if she liked it or not. Change startled her, sometimes.[break][break]

The knock on the door drew her attention from where she had reclined on her couch, resting her eyes in a brief spell of solitude.[break][break]

Visitors here were infrequent, but they were exclusively Rocket.[break][break]

"Rowan?" she said, surprised as the door widened to reveal the former Rocket Beast. "This is a surprise. What are you doing here?"[break][break]

She had yet to realize just how much of a deviation from her routine this would prove to be.

Nothing would be divulged until the door closed, assuring there would be no one to listen in on their conversation and the treason to which he was about to admit.[break][break]

"Glasses are up here, right?" Rowan asked as he stepped into the kitchen, familiar with the layout of her living space from past visits with his friend.

A quick rifling through the silverware produced a corkscrew, freeing the wine with a few purposeful twists. "I haven't told anyone else this, Arceus knows why I'm telling a newly appointed Underboss." He sighed, tipping the bottle and watching as the contents spilled into both of the glasses. Moving around the counter, he offered a glass to Elisabeth. Rowan took a small sip of his wine before exhaling, looking the woman in the eyes. "I'm leaving Team Rocket, Elisabeth, for good."

Her entire posture stilled as Rowan made his blatant confession, hackles raising like a Pyroar aware of a predator suddenly encroaching on their den. Elisabeth closed her eyes, steadying herself with a hand against a wall.[break][break]

"I'm leaving Team Rocket, Elisabeth, for good."

She'd known this possibility existed for him, for months now. What she didn't understand was what had made him choose to act on it now.[break][break]

Whether or not he knew the consequences of this course of action, and sharing such a thing with her, specifically.[break][break]

"Who have you told?" she began, her voice steeling. Calculations started in her mind, attempting to solve a problem with an unknown level of complexity.[break][break]

Rowan was not Remiel Calcifet. He did not have an entire nation to defend him.

"I've arranged for Gavin to get a letter once I'm in League custody, but I can't trust him to know before the deed is done." That mistrust didn't seem to be placed in Elisabeth, as evidenced by his being here.[break][break]

"I'm only telling you because I have a feeling I know what you might be thinking." A small smirk tugged at the corners of Rowan's mouth, having gotten to know her well in a rather short span of time since her arrival in Team Rocket. "It's an opportunity for you, right? A friend on the other side in case things get hairy here." It was an assumption, but he didn't take Elisabeth as someone who didn't think six steps ahead, she was always prepared.

"Say nothing to Gavin." Elisabeth's gaze demanded his, sharp and cutting as a knife's edge, as her eyes flashed with warning. "He will kill you if you do, Rowan. Mark my words."[break][break]

And he might kill her, she bitterly thought to herself, were he to know she had borne witness to this conversation in the first place.[break][break]

For all that he believed she could gain from such intelligence, the inverse was equally true. This knowledge poisoned her. The moment she knew it, she couldn't unknow it.[break][break]

"Forget me for a moment. How is it you intend to protect yourself?" she asked him pointedly. "You are turning your back on the most dangerous organization in the region. One you served as a Beast. Do you presume you will be allowed to leave peacefully?"[break][break]

The time for reason had long fled him, but she had to attempt it nonetheless.

He didn't acknowledge her warning regarding Cillian Quinn; perhaps he'd had ignored it on purpose out of some misplaced brotherly love. A silent alarm bell rang in her head, but she didn't speak again. If he wanted to risk the underboss's wrath, so be it.[break][break]

Elisabeth didn't understand sibling dynamics, after all.[break][break]

"There are many ways to exist in Rocket, Rowan. Black market deals and smuggling. Business operations. Not everything has to be dealt in blood."[break][break]

Though she knew it would be asked of them, eventually. It always was. No pound of flesh was ever enough for the hydra that was Rocket, and she'd learned that harsh lesson as METENO neared.[break][break]

"You have allies here. Me. Your brother. Your sister. Avatars and powerful individuals alike." She let the observation settle between them, so that its full weight might be felt. "Do you believe this Raziel Beckett can grant you equal protections, when those people inevitably turn on you?"[break][break]

She sipped at her drink, letting the rich flavor distract her briefly. It tasted oddly celebratory for such an unpleasant topic.[break][break]

"I won't hunt you down myself, you know. But if I see you on the battlefield, you are simply another body. I will not risk my own well-being for your own. You realize this, yes?"

"I used to believe Team Rocket could be different, that Kanto was a horrid past that wouldn't be repeated, I was wrong. I know you see it too, how the organization is changing, becoming more violent, more hostile." He was a fool to think that the occupation could be peaceful, that Declan Walsh and the other leadership would consider a diplomatic take-over instead of another massacre. [break][break]

"Razz escaped from Team Rocket himself, he knows how the organization operates and knows Gavin. If there is anyone I trust to keep me safe, it's him." A moment of silence lingered, hesitation as he considered whether or not to share what he knew. Was Razz's status public knowledge as he knew from the Cloud? "He's the Avatar of Reshiram, the Truthseeker. I believe him when he promises that he can."

The last point was something Rowan expected, nodding in agreement. "I do. Similarly, I'll be forced to oppose you, as well."

But perhaps more people cared about the flimsy veneer of respectability than she did. Perhaps Rowan Wrynn needed to believe in the lie that they were 'good' to stay sane here.[break][break]

Her grip on the wine glass tightened, knuckles blanching white.[break][break]

"I won't argue with you further, however. I can see you've already made your decision."[break][break]

The unsaid reprimand pulled at a tension between them both, before she looked away from him, relinquishing it in favor of another topic.[break][break]
